Are you a leader who suddenly finds it necessary to reinvent your career due to the economy, a layoff or changes in your personal life? Or, do these uncertain times simply inspire you to make a change?
Have you wondered if you can make a fresh start without completely starting over?
The good news is, you can. Below are nine secrets of reinventing your career:
Embrace Your Emotions
Allow yourself to experience anger, frustration, confusion, fear or excitement. In our rapidly changing and dynamic society it is natural and healthy to have an emotional response to events. Keeping your emotions bottled up inside does not serve you well and can compromise your ability to be authentic. Embrace your feelings and move forward.
Inventory Your Passions
Ask yourself, “What do I like about me? What do I do better than anyone else? What do I own or use that makes me unique?” Gather clues and feedback from family. Ask your friends to describe who you are at the core. Take an assessment to identify your strengths and values. The Values in Action Inventory (VIA-IS) is a free assessment that you can take to determine what are your strengths and how you can develop them.
Align Your Values With Your Work
Discovering what we value can be elusive especially under the influences of the “shoulds” from society and loved ones. Ask yourself, what is most important to me? Security? Freedom? Independence? Money? Once you can clearly articulate your values, you can then use them to filter those opportunities that best align with what matters most to you.
Leverage Your Network
This is the perfect time to learn how to share with others your unique benefits. Let others know what types of opportunities you are exploring and what you bring to the table. Remind your network of your towering strengths and experiences. Be visible. How? Listen to and collaborate with others; share your ideas; if you’re working, participate in meetings and accept projects that highlight your skills.
Say “Yes” to Everything
Learning to say “yes” to opportunities is a powerful expression of self-confidence. It attracts more (and better) opportunities and choices for you to consider. As you begin to focus on what you truly want to do, you can eliminate the opportunities that don’t align with your future.
Identify Your Transferable Skills
Instead of starting something entirely new, you can start by building on what you already know. Align your technical skills with your passion. Are you an analytical master? Find those opportunities that can leverage your strengths but from a different perspective. An accounting career could evolve into financial planning; from teacher to social worker; from marketer to consultant, etc.
Learn the Secret to Reinvention
Are you struggling with where to start? Do you know you want to change but not sure what your transformation should look like? Find safe ways to learn about potential paths you could take. Have the courage to experiment and explore the opportunities. Volunteer, job shadow, temp or take part-time work in a field you’ve always been curious about as a career. The best place to start is to follow whatever you’re drawn to—trust your instincts.
You’re not alone. There are always others in a similar position as you. This is no time to be isolated. Networking with others via job-hunting groups, small-business groups and manager support networks leads to new opportunities. Letting people know you’re looking for work is smart and resourceful. You are only as good as your network and that network could increase your net worth.
Turn Lemons into Lemon Meringue Pie
If it were impossible to fail, what career would you choose, today? Is it what you are doing now? If not, could this transition be the time to make a significant change? When you are faced with transition or are at an inflection point in your career, perhaps it is time to start working on the next chapter of your professional career.
